Understanding Qualifications For Nurses

Qualifications For Nurses

Often people think of all the education requirements that need to be met when they look at qualifications for nurses. However, there are a lot of other qualifications that one needs to take into consideration when deciding whether or not to go into the nursing field. Even though there are many vacancies for nurses in the majority of areas, you want to make sure that you will be able to meet qualifications before pursuing nursing as your chosen career.

Personality Qualifications

It is important to have an outgoing but compassionate personality for the nursing profession. You need to have an upbeat and positive attitude to help patients feel comfortable and recover but at the same time you need to be compassionate. It is important to understand that many people that you will be dealing with on a day to day basis are in pain, not feeling well or nervous about their health situation. The combination of a positive attitude and compassion is imperative.

Background Check Qualifications

You cannot make it in the nursing profession if you have a questionable background. Medical facilities and companies are entrusting you with not only confidential patient health information but with care of many, many people. The industry has very strict guidelines as a whole as well as the individual places that you will be seeking nursing employment. Minor infractions such as a speeding ticket will not typically pose any problems. Convictions or court appearances for more questionable behaviors will result in your not finding employment even if you have met the educational requirements for nursing.

Volunteer Hours

It is very important to have volunteer hours at least one, if not several, medical facilities. Volunteer hours allow you the chance to experience healthcare first hand. It also shows that you are willing to help and improve the community where you reside. Part of being a nurse is showing that you have the desire to make a positive difference in the lives of other people. What better way to show that you have this qualification than through volunteering both your time and your services to the community? Even if you do not volunteer in a medical facility you could assist in other areas of your community.

Letters of Reference

It is important to establish that you are responsible and can meet the duties required of nurses. During your volunteer time and your university work, obtain letters of reference from others around you. This will show that you meet the qualifications of being organized, responsible, task oriented and a team player.

General Education

All nurses need to complete an Associate Degree or two year nursing degree. You can also choose to get a Bachelor of Science four year degree or even get a master's degree. If you are going to offer a specialty such as dental or radiology, you will need to obtain additional courses related to whatever the selected specialty is going to be.

Registered nurses need to take the state board examinations and become licensed and certified. The certification will give them a higher status both payroll and position responsibilities in the nursing end of the healthcare profession.

To be a nurse means that you are more than just education. You need to have the personality, meet background checks, volunteer, have references and complete the education requirements to meet all of the qualifications for nurses.
